‘Teachers are leaders’
Educationists discuss how to bring about social change

Magasasay award winner and educationist Sandeep Pandey works to educate underprivileged children in India. His organisation Asha provides education to children who do not go to school.

“It is a very naïve assumption that education will benefit the children who are not going to school. So, we started an organisation called Asha, to help those children who were not going to school,” said Sandeep.

He is not the only one to set a precedent in the field of education, Parth Shah, president for Centre for Civil Societies, which believes in voucher system of education, and Shaheen, who works for underprivileged children like Sandeep, show how significantly teachers can shape up the life of their students. They know what a huge responsibility they carry on their shoulders of bringing about a social change.

“Perhaps the greatest leadership training in the entire world is in becoming a teacher,” said Shaheen.

Drawing a comparison between a great teacher and a leader, Shaheen said just as a leader sets a vision, makes a plan, knows to how to execute the plan and works relentlessly, so is the case with a great teacher.
