UK ENDS POST-STUDY VISA
The UK has ended the system of allocating automatic post-study work visas. From now on, students who earn a degree in the UK will not be automatically eligible for a work permit, but will have to show a guaranteed job offer of over GBP 20,000 pounds annually.

The UK government has also announced a freeze on the skilled worker permit cap. The measures have been introduced following complaints that foreign students were enrolling in courses just for the promise of a work permit. According to Immigration Minister Damian Green, “Too many students have come to the UK to work rather than study."

QS WORLD MBA TOUR COMES TO INDIA
The QS MBA Tour will be coming to India this month. The event, which will let aspiring B-school candidates interact with education experts and faculty will be held in New Delhi (21 May), Mumbai (24 May), and Bangalore (26 May). Students will be able to take advantage of GMAT workshops, receive information on admissions and scholarships, and meet career guidance counsellors and faculty members.

CAMBRIDGE OFFERS MBA SCHOLARSHIPS
The Cambridge Judge Business School has announced scholarships for the 2012 entry to their Post Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship. Candidates who meet the academic entry, entrepreneurial potential, and financial aid requirements will be given scholarships of up to GBP 3,000 pounds. Those who wish to apply will also have to write an admission essay of 1,000 words that displays their potential for the programme.

GOVT BACKS PRIVATE INVOLVEMENT
The Government of India has backed greater private sector involvement in education. A declaration to this effect was made at the National Convention on Indian Higher Education - Vision for Quality, Autonomy, and Accountability, organised by the Education Promotion Society of India in New Delhi. Speaking at the convention, Minister of State for HRD, E Ahmed said that the government was open to the prospect of private sector involvement and investment in higher education.

SHIV NADAR UNI ANNOUNCES BABSON TIE-UP
Shiv Nadar University (SNU) has announced a tie-up with Babson College, USA. From 2013, students will be offered a choice of MBA, MS (Entrepreneurship), and BBA courses. The Shiv Nadar University-Babson BBA is a four-year programme that will give students the option to study at Babson College’s US campus for one or two semesters. SNU has also announced a spate of new scholarships. Post Graduate students in subjects such as engineering, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences will be offered fellowships and scholarships ranging from Rs 5.45 lakh to Rs 9.4 lakh. “We believe that a combination of interdisciplinary research, global pedagogy, world-class faculty and infrastructure and the right enabling environment would help us train students for leadership positions in academia, industry, government, research laboratories, and non-profit organisation,” stated SNU Vice Chancellor Nikhil Sinha.

The University of Pennsylvania’s famed Wharton School of Business has announced it will soon be opening a campus in India. According to Wharton officials, they were considering setting up an education centre in Mumbai. This centre will also double up as an alumni meeting space, and will provide classroom facilities to students. This is yet another in a long list of premier colleges setting up base in India.
